Q: Why are we doing these projects?

A: The goal with the proposed projects is to improve the accessibility and safety of the corridor for pedestrians and bicyclists using 20th Street E and 62nd Avenue E.

  • 20th Street E

    • 20th Street serves as a connection between the Fife Aquatic Center, Fife High School, Fife Elementary School, and the Fife Library. These are places that people often wish to bike or walk to. There are gaps in the sidewalk and bike lanes and the road surface is also experiencing failure in several locations between the Fife Aquatic Center and 68th Avenue.

    • These projects’ objectives are to provide continuous pedestrian and bicycle connections to the schools and reconstruct 20th Street E.

    • These projects will also reduce the speed limit from 35 MPH to 30 MPH.

  • Interurban Trail Extension to Puyallup

    • This project aims to improve safety and mobility near the existing Interurban Trail trailhead so that there is a safer transition to 20th Street E than currently exists.

  • 62nd Avenue E - 20th Street E and Valley Avenue E

    • Provide bicycle lanes on 62nd Avenue.

    • Provide continuous sidewalk on the west side of 62nd Ave E

Q: What are the proposed improvements?

A: The proposed section for 20th Street improvements and 62nd Avenue E are outlined below:

  • 20th Street E: Fife Aquatic Center to the Sheffield Trail

    • shared use path and planter strip on south side

    • sidewalk and planter strip on north side

    • Stormwater improvements

    • Undergrounding of distribution power

    • Improved street lighting, pavement markings, and signage

  • Interurban Trail Extension to Puyallup

    • wide sidewalk on north side

    • curb and gutter, landscape planter on north side

    • improved street lighting

    • Stormwater improvements

    • Undergrounding of distribution power

  • 62nd Avenue E between 20th Street E and Valley Avenue E

    • new sidewalk and planter strip on west side

    • buffered Bike lanes

    • eliminate the center two-way-left-turn lane

Q: Why is the City focusing on this area?

A: The City’s Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) identified these as areas in need of improvements that would fill the gap between other recently completed improvements. The roadways are close to schools, housing developments and the Sheffield and Interurban Trails and these projects provide improved and safer access for bikes, pedestrians and other users.
